Comments on Beethoven.com Selections

I thought I'd start a new thread here for comments on selections played on B.com. Traditionally, I've started threads on the specific composers or pieces played. Hopefully, this generic title will allow running commentary on the variety of pieces played.

I just wanted to say that I'm enjoying the piece currenlty playing, Symphonie Espagnole by Edouad Lalo. I had thought I had heard this piece before, as parts of it sound familiar, but I do not recognize the whole work. I believe I may have some works by Lalo in my vinyl collection, but I don't recall any specifics.

I'd like to thank Luis in Guatemala for requesting it.

P.S., a quick search at Barnes & Noble shows that I do, indeed, have some works by Lalo, on a Yo-Yo Ma CD.

Thanks for starting this thread Shap!

I enjoyed (for the most part) the Baroque Saturday.

I realized one thing - I wasn't overly impressed with the version of Bach's Toccata and Fugue (more of an orchestral version of it). It loses alot of it's darkness and eerieness.

I much prefer the organ version. Just my opinion.

I rarely get to listen on weekends, so I didn't get to enjoy Baroque Saturday.

There is an orchestral version of the Toccata and Fugue that was used in Disney's Fantasia which gets played on B.com once in a while. I agree with you that the organ version is better. I have it on vinyl performed by E. Power Biggs, which is my favourite recording of it. I have a couple others as well, most of which don't measure up, IMHO. The Rollerball performance of the Toccata is very good, but doesn't include the Fugue. I don't recall the performer.

I' rather enjoying this Porgy and Bess Suite as well. However, I've always considered it a bit to 'jazzy' to be considered classical music. It kind of has a smoky night-club feel to it, IMHO.

Oh, my word. My belly hurts from laughing through the Yodeling!!!!! I can hardly see to type, and I keep breaking out in a big silly grin.

I completely lost it when the Yodeller was triple-tonguing the William Tell. Talk about fall-out-of-the-chair-roll-on-the-floor laughing! I may never get over....

Ok, seriously...............The Cuban Overture's been played twice today!

C'mon, I'm sure there are enough decent classical music pieces that can be found over the last 400+ years to fill in the 24 hour slot that would make it unnecessary to replay the Cuban Overture twice in one day.

I'm listening to quite a different version of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 2, Op. 19 (1st movement). (Just to make it clear, this wasn't playing on Beethoven.com)

Jos Van Immerseel is the pianist with the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra. The piano concerto is played on period instruments, including a period fortepiano.

I really must say I did not like that version much. I'm not sure if my ears were deceiving me, but that fortepiano sounding like a cross between a mandolin and a banjo. Seriously. Is that really how an old piano sounded like then? Yeesh!

I love LVB's Piano Concerto #2. Yes, it certainly isn't as sophisticated and refined as his 4 other PC's, but that's partly why I find it endearing. The Adagio is beautiful, perhaps simple, but gorgeous. IMHO.

Finally got back to my desk from my Team Building dreck, desperately need to hear something cheerful, and what's on B.com? Barber's Adagio. ZZZzzzzzzzzzz.

Not that I wouldn't profit from the nap, mind you. But it doesn't look good.

Question: Is it Night on The Bare Mountain, or Night on The Bald Mountain? by Modest Mussorgsky.

Night on the Bare Mountain (Originally St. John's Night on the Bare Mountain) is the original orchestral (1867) and then choral (1873) work by Mussorgsky, Night on Bald Mountain is the orchestral work based on the original, as redone by Rimsky-Korsakov in 1908.

B.com Plays the 1867 version occasionally as Night on the Bare Mountain, but the 1908 version is the more familiar.

Thanks for clearing that up Shap. I was really confused. Some sites and books say Bare Mountain, others say Bald Mountain......I thought maybe at first it was simply a typo, but obviously not!

There were no mentions of Brokeback Mountain.
