I declare the 1st Catmando Top Ten to be:

you sain including voice, right? how fine tuned can we go with voice types, we shouldn't go too far, or the list won't work. should we just say voice, or differentiate soprano, mezzo, contralto, tenor, baritone, bass. or maybe just SATB? tenor spinto? colorature? probably too much.
non-western instruments?

Pretty much anything goes *ig. You can definitely differentiate on voices as much as you'd like. Nothing wrong with alot of variety.

That One-stringed Broomstick-and-washpan thing that I don't know the name of

Jew's Harp aka Mouth Harp - I found a whole bunch of nice illustrations on Google Images, just search on Jew's Harp.

Perhaps we should also include classics such as slide whistle, tin whistle, kazoo (there are several subvarieties of kazoo, who knew?) and those nifty gadgets the percussion section plays with.

I like a nice recorder, and the 3 stringed washbasin guitar I heard on the street in NOLA, but they dont make my top 10.
There are lots of lovely asian instruments, as well as our mountain instruments.

I'm partial to spoons. Probably make the top 20 in my list.

the problem with too much variety is that the resluts aren't statistically representative. also different people might end up voting for the same thing for different names. I guess it can come down to the judgment of the compiler. you can decide that the person who wrote coloratura soprano, would also be a fan of sopranos in general and add the vote to that category.

You're right, it comes down to a judgment call from the compiler. If I come up with some stumpers, I'll ask the board for a ruling.

So far, only a few cases where I've had to make a judgment call.

I do say the more variety, in the end, the better. Diversity is good IMHO! Even though it may skew statistics.

This is an international board, so we shouldnt limit instruments to those common in the western repertoire. I'm glad you are not, Cat.

Fellow members,

I'm excited to say, that out of the 8 lists received so far, every individual has at least one unique favorite instrument listed that another does not have on their list! I think that's fantastic, and in particular, that is what I like to see for this particular Top Ten topic.

I have a lofty goal of receiving 20 liszts before the next Friday night's headline. It is lofty, but not unrealistic. Any fan of music can contribute to this topic!
