Shos

I know & love a great Indian conductor: Zubin Mehta.

he's Indian and a musician, but not an Indian musician. he's a western musician who happens to be indian.

My point is that there is no need for these differentiations - music is music is music (miksha ahat).
Of course individual taste counts - some prefer Beethoven to Bach, Pink Floyd to Mendelssohn or Beatles to Mozart. All are influenced by all.
Look at Boccherini - born in Italy, spent a large portion of his life in Spain, and composed works combining Arabic and Baroque styles.

I've been offered money to shut up. Does that count?

TM hasn't checked in yet. I think he gets paid to play.

The other big,

Can you link me to some Gender Wayang music and Tuvan throat signing so I can hear it for myself? My searches don't come up with much that is listenable.

Do you like webcomics? Sluggy Freelance just had a serial where the characters were stuck in a Wayang Kulit play, and discovered some deeply hidden things about themselves. That's one of the the points of Wayang Kulit, right? That the shadow characters reveal the truth of what is hidden in the light?

I'll definitely check out the Sluggy freelance thing.

firstly, you haven'r paid me my trademark dues for the last 6 months, they're overdue! also, I am big, you are the other big.

OK, having cleared those important issues....

Gender Wayang music: all I can really think of right now are the little bits on Amazon samples. try these and track 8 here

Tuvan Throat singing:
there a lot of it on khoomei.com on the free video gallery, make sure you don't download the same thing twince, the guy who runs it does it from his own money, and the files are big.
you can also check the amazon samples (or napster?) for anything by Huun-Huur-Tu. they're the best. you can also check this.

bigjon has to pay a monthly fee, because of his blatant and egregious use of the trademarked word. he has to pay $4,567 a month.

<sigh> clearly the elder pharts are channelling Bob Seger. Oddly, I find the tune running through my mind.

The shadow characters start in the middle of this week. http://www.sluggy.com/daily.php?date=060415&mode=weekly The story arc lasts over a month.

But you are big and I am Big

Those weren't really satisfactory since Amazon only gives you the first thirty seconds of so of the song. My understanding is that the complexity grows as the song progresses.

Cool, some of those samples are amazing. These guys http://www.khoomei.com/hht.htm are coming to my back yard in August at the Philly Folk Fest. I'll have to make it a point to attend.

When my throat is full of phlegm, I can sometimes make dual frequency noises when I hum, but there is no way to control the frequencies.

Are you just learning the Gender and Throat singing, or are you going to attempt to compose for them?[/b]

too much there in those comics, I gave up...

I can't think of any place online with full tracks of Gender Wayang. maybe napster.

yeah, those guys are the best, you really have to check them out. I just became interested in thraot singing right after they had a concert in Boston, so I missed out. I don't know when they'll come around again (to new haven), but I get the newletter, so I'll find out...
I didn't compose yet for gender Wayang, but I incorporate a lot of the elements of the music into my music. I also incorporated Tuvan-sounding stuff into my latest piece (violin duet), it is played only with natural harmincs, which reflects the Tuvan obsession with harmonics. I have one throat-sung chord in my piece for clarinet and piano. the pianist is supposed to sing it, since I'm the only pianist I know who can thraot-sing, I think perfomances will be limited. :D

Here is where the actual depiction of the play is. Every frame colored in sepia tones is supposed to be the play.

Yes, Sluggy is very dense, sometimes non-linear and not easy to follow, but in the end it is always nifty!

Here is the Wiki about the comic
