I need some advice.

I'm just discovering Telemann (yeah, yeah, I know. But I'm getting around to him now) and I really like the piece that was played 1.15am 9/22 on the music log. If I make a trip to the local Borders, or place an order on Amazon, what should I get to start my Telemann collection?

Hmm, maybe because it's lacking some greats like Johnny Bench, Carlton Fisk, Gary Carter.

Mike Piazza offensively yes, but certainly not defensively.

It was not just the review at amazon. Anyway, I can say to myself that those reviews are from people who have probably listened to a lot of this stuff, which does not apply to a newbie like me.

I'm curious about what it was you didn't like on CD#2. The concertos and the performers are top notch. On paper it looks like a great combination.

Nothing, nothing at all. I was just a little disappointed that the reviews didn't have anything special to say about that CD. Of course, there's a reason why many consider Perelman as one of the top violinists of the last century, although he may not have been at the peak of his career when this CD was recorded. But as I said earlier, it would probably not make that much a difference to me.

Is anyone familiar with this set: Vivaldi Masterworks Box Set ?

I see you can buy it new on the 'new and used' link for as little as $58 and some change - a bargain, to be sure (about $1.50/CD after shipping). I'm vaguely familiar with the conductor Pinnock (I think I have a CD or two with him as conductor, but not with Martini, Banfalvi, or any of the others.

Any thoughts? There is only one review, from a person who hasn't heard the set and merely says, as I did, that you can hardly go wrong at the price. Has anyone out there actually heard the CD's?

That's a collection to envy, Shap! With just the right hardware, you could start your own station! So which is your favourite Beethoven symphonies set?

Well, here's my collection. I'll put it down when it's small, and may be I'll edit this list whenever I add something and place a link to this post in my sig, for anyone who is bored to go through it.

It may appear that I prefer violin concerti over other types, but I actually would like more piano in there.

Thanks. You've got some fine works in your list, as well.

Does your local msuic store have a 'discount bin'? I've picked up some fine works that way, sometimes for less than a dollar a disk. Around here, you can pick up some fine works there, if you don't mind digging a little through the CD pile. Locals will by-pass the collections with titles in French, German, or Japanese, unless they're on the Deuche Gramophon label, in favour of English-language labels. You don't have to speak the language to recognize the works, and you can find some excellent recordings that way. Of course, my area isn't as culturally diverse as Madras, where every language is probably spoken.

Regarding Beethoven's symphonies, the Karajan/Berliner Collection is by far the better of the two. I bought them one-at-a-time, as they were not available as a set then, and I couldn't have afforded them if they did. Sometime after the release of the last disk, they were packaged together in a box and sold that way. This would have been in the mid to late '80s, I believe, I bought the 5th and the 3rd while I was still in the Navy. They weren't released in numerical order, or at least weren't available in the stores I visited that way. I believe the more popular ones, the 3rd, 5th, and 9th, were released first, then the rest followed. I think the 4th and 7th (which are on one disk) were the last I found. The 7th remains my favourite.

I have a several of the symphonies, but not the full set, by Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic, which remains my favourite recording. I also have a full set on vinyl by Kripps and the London Festival Orchestra, which was my first recording of any of them. The included performance of the 9th still remains my favourite recording of that symphony.

Very nice collection Shap! Strong collection of Mozart.

We have the same Mahler (Tennstedt) collection, which is growing on me more with each listen. Lisztened to the 6th yesterday and the 1st today.

The only thing I would change Shap is that you have a little more Brahms and a little less Gershwin

Nav, you need to get the Bruch G minor ( I recommend Zuckerman) and Mendelssohn's E minor ( no hands down recommendation from me). You have Accardo on Paganini. How do you like it? I find Accardo lacking fire, although with beautiful intonation. I have him on the Bruch and Sibelius. Ho hum. His performances on Bruch # 2 and 3 are fine, given little competition.

I've been on a Schubert kick lately. I've heard half a dozen "Tragic" Symphonies on CD. My favorite performance is by Wolfgang Sawallisch, but it's on vinyl. My favorite on CD is el cheapo on Pilz with Alfred Scholz. Claudio Abbado lacks tension in the first movement, but his other 3 are excellent.

There may be some excellent recordings of Schubert's 2nd. I've heard about half a dozen here, too, but none to match the performance of William Steinberg on an old Capitol mono record (Pittsburgh Sym). I have not generally thought of Steinberg as an exciting conductor, but this 2nd (with a very good Unfinished on the flip side) is an exception to that rule. The only other Steinberg performance that knocks my socks off is Holst's Planets (Boston Sym).

I wonder how Steinberg was with Bruckner and Mahler. I think of him as ideal for that repertoire, but I have not heard any. Has anybody?
