I have an EMERGENCY add to my musical wish list. I heard this piece last night on the way back from a meeting.

I should have pulled over and parked on the shoulder, as I could have gotten into an accident. That's because the music piece I heard (for the 1st time) was so mesmerizing, haunting. Beautiful!!!

The piece: Adagio for Strings (for Orchestra) by Samuel Barber.

It is a beautiful piece. I often get it confused with Albinoni's Adagio for Strings for some reason, which is also beautiful.

I'm surprised you'd not heard it before. B.com plays it infrequently.

The Adagio was used in the soundtrack of Platoon. It also got a lot of play right after 9/11.

I have an RCA CD (issued through BMG) with 8 versions of the adagio:
for string quartet (the original), orchestra, James Galway + synthesizers, Canadian Brass, a capella (called Agnus Dei), clarinet choir, organ, and chamber orch.

Barber's Dance of Vengeance (from Medea) and School for Scandal Overture are also winners. They appear with the Adagio and his 3 Essays for Orchestra on an EMI disc with Slatkin and the St. Louis Sym.

Casals Cello suites recording put the cello suites on the map as concert pieces, and are legendary.

The 16-month-old little girl suffers from SRS (Spoiled Rotten Syndrome). I thought daughter #1 was strong-willed. I was wrong.

Husband is finally learning how to survive in the the estrogen-filled house. Life is good.
