I like that piece. I have never heard the entire "Suite of Symphonies" although I think I have them on vinyl somewhere. Shortly after Masterpeice Theatre began using that theme, Mouret saw something of a resurgence, and you could find a variety of his works available. Some of his other works were quite good, I seem to recall, but I can't name any right off the top of my head. A quick scan of Barne & Nobles site shows only the Rondeau available there now.

I've never heard of Mouret before. I don't think I've ever seen Masterpiece Theatre, although I think it wasn't available on regular network channels in Canada.

Is it/was it on PBS?

Yes, it was on PBS. It is/was a PBS presentation which had Alistair Cooke introducing various BBC productions - many of which you've likely seen. Programmes such as Upstairs/Downstairs, I Claudius, Poldark, and Anna Karenina were brough to American viewers through Masterpiece Theater.

Mouret and a bunch of other baroque composers had a resurgence on Nonesuch and Turnabout records. Baroque forces were light, and the companies could produce for $2-3 per disc. You're right that Masterpiece Theater gave Mouret more ratings. The rest of the Suite #1 of Symphonies yields no other winners. Don't rush to your vinyls on that account.

I've been meaning to dig my vinyl collection out of that corner of the basement they occupy, hook up a turntable to my stereo and give some of my old favourites a spin. Then again, I've got so many CD's I haven't even heard yet, it seems to be not worth the effort.

I need about 2-3 more hours per day, designated as 'listening time'.
