Nope, Borello , because the constant theme repetition is soooooooo boring....

I think I'd prefer the kazoo over bagpipes. there'd need to be quite a lot of them, a few more coming in with every iteration of the theme to add depth and dynamics to it....

Kazoos would work. I have a history with kazoos.

Picture a decent sized church choir. Very dignified, robes and everything. Christmas day services, visiting bishop, all kinds of formal bigtime hoo-haw. At the end of rehearsal, as we are asked to get out the piece we're singing for the introit, we do so but an alto has handed out kazoos. We came in perfectly, four parts, on kazoo.

The choir director was still having trouble breathing at the New Year's party. Fortunately, a couple of cups of Lutheran Party Punch fixed her up.

That particular performance to which treebau posted was really not good at all.

Bolero is simple and repetitive. I like a well performed Bolero but, being a musician (of sorts), I can see how it would become something you'd just dread performing. Takes some concentration to put the umph in it.

What's with everybody (Nicole included) and their gripes about repetition in serious music? Ravel and Pachelbel are certainly not the only composers (and won't be the last) who have sort to effectively use that technigue in their compositions. Anyone ever notice how Shostakovich uses repetition in the first movement of his "Leningrad" Symphony? Those several minutes powerfully and musically describe the German advance in the Soviet Union during WWII with definite increasing crescendo. He doesn't even both to change the instrumentation as Ravel certainly did.

Can anyone else think of other examples of this musical technique? Let's help relieve poor BOLERO of the appearance of being so unique.

TTTT, I don't find Bolero repetitive. Yes, the same tune goes around over and over, but it's done by different instruments or different combinations of instruments just about every other pass. Lots of music repeats. Isn't that what the |: and symbols mean in sheet music?

I like Bolero.

I also like Pachabel. I didn't much care for it, until I heard it played live by the Reno Philharmonic (not all entertainment in Reno is Bill Murray 'Lounge Lizard' style, although there is plenty of that.) I have a level 2 score of Canon that I can get part way through on a piano, but I wouldn't play it for anyone but my wife's bird, and then only in retribution for shrieking.

Bolero just played. The visual today was that annoying MS Word paperclip, an entire batallion of him, marching around in block formation.

I like that a lot better than him giving me "helpful hints" and changing my spelling and grammar to what he thinks I meant. He's cute marching around with a whole lot of clones. Play Bolero again!
