Sorry, not being a pianist (but I have drank a lot of tea, so I could be the peein'ist), I assume that any work which modifies the form of another while retaining some semblance of the original theme is a variation, while that variation can be written in the form of a sonata, étude, fantasia, or whatever. That was what I meant when I asked the question.
