Yes, but a lot of Liszt's solo works can be misconstrued as variations like the Totentanz and operatic fantasies.

My composition is strictly known and titled as a set of variations. And that's what I thought would have been determined by the question, "Is the composition a variation on the work of another composer?"

Diabelli variations, Variations on a theme of Chopin, Variations on "Non piu andrai" etc.

Sorry, not being a pianist (but I have drank a lot of tea, so I could be the peein'ist), I assume that any work which modifies the form of another while retaining some semblance of the original theme is a variation, while that variation can be written in the form of a sonata, étude, fantasia, or whatever. That was what I meant when I asked the question.

Well Shap, I guess that's true, but since you've got just ONE question left, I won't use the etude one. I lend thee all a freebie question for #30.

I'm actually surprised no one has gotten this yet. I hope that means I didn't foul up somewhere with my yes or no's. As a disclaimer, this particular piece was hard to fit in to the standard questions. If I messed up, you can all beat me later :poke:
