Thus we can exclude Italy (per Bignaf), Germany (borders the Rhine), Japan and Thailand (not European), Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Romania, and Slovakia (Currency is not yet the Euro).

I believe that leaves only Finland.

I think I was confused for the following reasons:

Scandinavia is a region in Northern Europe. A common definition includes Denmark, mainland Norway and Sweden. Sometimes Finland is included, even in official contexts, although since the rise of Scandinavism in 1850s, this inclusion divides opinions in all of the respective states.

And Finland was not in my list of MAJOR powers, let alone Axis powers, involved in the World Wars.

Valid point. I looked at three lists of Axis powers. The first listed Germany, Italy, and Japan as major Axis powers, and included Finland with the minor powers, the second did not differentiate between major and minor powers. The third list lumped Thailand (which was not on the first two) and Finland together in a seperate listing of 'also-rans'.

My best recollection of history was that Finland was as much a player as the other 'minor' powers, Croatia, et. al. However, browsing the Wikipedia entry on the military history of Finland during World War II leaves that open to debate.

I'm wondering if Bignaf did not mean one of the other countries, such as Hungary, which have agreed to adopt the Euro, but which has not become the official currency yet. (I believe Hungary officially adopts the Euro in 2007, Croatia and Slovakia later, 2008 or 2010, I'd have to Google it again to be sure).

I double checked - it is Slovenia that adopts the Euro in 2007, Hungary does not adopt it until 2011 or later.

I guess I could point out that Austria was an Axis power by virtue of its' being a part of Germany at that time. However, since it borders the Rhine, it would not fit the bill.

ok, I mislead you, so here's a freebie. It's Austria.

and, you're wrong. wikipedia doesn't say Austria borders the rhine. it says Austria is included in the "basin countries" of the rhine. which means a small part of Austria drains into the Rhine. the Rhine itself begins in Awitzerland.

This is what I found on the Rhine in Wikipedia:

Switzerland
The Rhine's origins are in the Swiss Alps in the canton of Graubünden, where its two main initial tributaries are called Vorderrhein and Hinterrhein. The Vorderrhein (anterior Rhine) springs from Lake Tuma near the Oberalp Pass and passes the impressive Ruinaulta (the Swiss Grand Canyon). The Hinterrhein (posterior Rhine) starts from the Paradies glacier near the Rheinquellhorn at the southern border of Switzerland. One of the latter tributaries originates in Val di Lei in Italy. Both tributaries meet near Reichenau, still in Graubünden.From Reichenau, the Rhine flows north as the Alpenrhein passing Chur and forming the frontier with Liechtenstein and then Austria, and then emptying into Lake Constance. Emerging from Lake Constance, flowing west as the Hochrhein it passes the Rhine Falls and is joined by the Aare river which more than doubles its water discharge to an average of nearly 1,000 cubic meters per second. It forms the boundary with Germany until it turns north at the so-called Rhine knee at Basel.
