I've been in a Saint-Saens mood lately, and I see that his Opus 1 is entitled Trois morceaux for harmonium. I have never seen a recording of this anywhere, not that I've looked. I decided to do some Googling, and didn't find any, but I did find that you can buy harmoniums made in India, that fit in their own travel case. Apparently these mini-reed organs are quite popular there.

Nav, are you familar with them?

Harmoniums are used a lot in carnatic music. they're good at providing a drone, but are also used melodically.

Hey, come on guys! Brahms' first three piano sonatas are spread over three different opus numbers, whereas Beethoven's Opus 1 contains all three of his first sonatas. :shock:

So there's value for money if nothing else! And the C minor (no.3) was so revolutionary that Haydn advised LvB not to publish it.

Peter, aren't you thinking of Beethoven's Op. 2 with his first three piano sonatas?

As for another Opus 1, does Handel's HWV 1 count? The amazing Almira opera is pretty mature for a young Handel.

Familiar...Yes, I've seen them being played in various instances, although never in a carnatic concert - it's from the North. Mostly they are used in ghazals, bhajans (devotional songs performed by a person or a group), qawalis and other places. Hindustani singers use it while they are teaching. I think some of the music "composers" for movies still use them today when they are trying to "create" a tune. :mrgreen:

(at least, that's how they used to show it in the movies.)

Sorry Hex, yes, LvB's first three sonatas are of course Op.2, his first three trios are Opus 1. But I think the gist of my point is the same (whatever that was....). BTW, your cover is blown, sir (I know you from the other place). :mrgreen:
