I ws Googling various keywords, and Nixon in China came up, apparently it was performed by some opera company with 'farm' in their name, or on a farm or something...

Anyway it didn't fit the bill, since Nixon didn't actually gow up on a farm, and he didn't actually take over China.

But he did hit the big time.

Shap's official guess isn't the one I was thinking of but I'll look for a synopsis to make sure it doesn't use the same plot. Back in Mozart's time many operas were just rewrites of the same story. That continued into the 19 century and the early 20th as well.
