Any recommendations for good performances of the Hungarian Dances?

Actually, when I bought those CD's last time, I also spotted a DG 2 CD set of Hungairan dances, with the Tragic and Academic Festival Overtures as bonus tracks, conducted by Abbado. It was also cheaper than the usual 2CD sets. I also saw the older CD from the 80's with only the dances, but for some reason, I didn't buy them. [link]

I'll probably get a set with just the HDs, since I already have the Tragic and Academic Overture with the Brahms Orchestral Works CD that I have.

By the way, I heard a symphony on the local radio the other day. I think it was the first movement of the symphony they played. It was unmistakeably a Mozart symphony, and it was lovely! .......ohhhh....it wasn't Mozart after all. (stumped again). It was Schubert's 5th Symphony, 1st movement.

That's interesting. I went through a period of saying "Mozart" when I heard the Schubert 5th. It lasted for years, but I finally broke the habit. The work is incredibly "Mozartian" for our money.

no shame in thinking Schubert's 5th is Mozart, in fact it's the most correct guess. it is very Mozartean even on deeper levels. the manner of "development" is Mozartean, the longer, gracefuller melodies are Mozartean. and I think the main theme is very close to a certain Mozart theme. which? I forget.

As I have stated many times before, and being a newbie, LvB's symphonies have always been on the top of my to-buy list. I prefer to buy individual disks
than boxed sets, and I want to get 5, 6 and 9 first. Here are some that I've come across with good reviews. Your opinions and recommendations, as always, will help me a lot. Thanks.

5 - Kleiber, Karajan ('63) Are disks from this set available separately ?

6 - Walter/Columbia Sym., Bohm/VPO

9 - I'm not sure about this one. Karajan?

I have this one by Karajan, and I think it is a fine recording. I have been told he has done better ones. I have the entire set in this particular collection, which I listed in the 'your collection' thread. I acquired them individually, but I have seen them still available as a full set in the music stores.

Ok, I'm looking for some suggestions on Mozart symphonies. Which ones are must have (if not all), and great Mozart symphony conductors (I know Neville Marriner is highly acclaimed in this regard). Merci !

Get the 2-Disc set of the late symphonies (35-41) by Bohm. Of course, I haven't heard it yet, but it's on my wishlist.

For a slightly different Mozart experience, try the Tafelmusik recordings. (My husband's playing on the Six Symphonies after Serenades recording. )

He's a violinist with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra (he's their webmaster, too ).

Rob is also one of the (relatively) few baroque violin specialists in Canada. He used to play a couple of times a year with baroque ensembles, but his schedule is too busy now to be able to, much to his regret.

I love baroque violin concerti, especially Bach's, and of course, The Four Seasons.
