Copying Beethoven

I'm not sure if all of you are aware of the new Beethoven movie coming out called "Copying Beethoven" with Ed Harris. It's out in Europe and receiving incredible reviews. But for some reason, critics in America aren't as kind. I guess we'll have to wait and see for ourselves when it hits theaters November 10th.

Most of the critics here think Beethoven is a St. Bernard. They were probably lost right from the title....

Ed Harris' acting really shines in the independent films he acts/directs. His Jackson Pollack is a wonderful performance. I can only hope this one will be along those lines. I wouldn't attack the intellectual acumen of some of our native movie critics too hard. They are probably some of those who can listen and know they are hearing Beethoven without seeing it in the credits.

There is also a movie in pre-production about "The Red Priest". Joseph Fiennes is cast as Vivaldi. I don't think it comes out until 2008.

Well guys, get with the program

There's a BBC film on Beethoven's Eroica, a movie about Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Verdi, and a great Wagner mini series.. There are also two Chopin movies: Impromptu and Chopin: Desire for Love.

There's more of course, but these are the most popular.

There are also some oldies: Song of Love (Schumann), A Song to Remember (Chopin), Song Without End (Liszt), The Great Waltz (Strauss Jr), The Melody Lovers or The Music Lovers or some such thing (Tchaikovsky), Rhapsody in Blue (guess who). The composers are played by Paul Henreid (with Kate Hepburn as Clara), Cornell Wilde, Dirk Bogarde, Richard Chamberlain, Robert Alda.

His bday anniversary approaches, and I discovered this in the archives, from either 2003 or 2018, depending on which bulletinboard revision you believe. It responds to a question regarding the annual Beethoven's Bday parade.

Actually, I missed the parade. Much too busy with the annual Beethoven Day telethon. My wife went shopping, and was shocked to find that so many of the shoppers associated the big sales with Christmas, which was still a week and a half away! Some people !

It's sad how the Beethoven's Day holiday has degraded lately. Of course, It's difficult to keep up the shoppers enthusiasm, what with it following little more than a week after the big Pearl Harbor Day sales!

What's a "limited" release?

A limited release is a release to a small number of theatres. It is commonly done with films that are not expected to have a wide audience appeal. Foreign films are often opened with a limited release. If they perform well at the small number of box offices, they will expand the theatre offerings. If not, you have to travel to a big city to see the film, or wait for the DVD release.

Kagemusha and Das Boot initially underwent limited releases. Das Boot went to a larger release, but I don't recall that Kagemusha ever did. Those are the two biggest examples of limited releases that I can recall.

Actually, I'd better correct myself. I think Das Boot, which was in German with English subtitles, never received a full release. The film was dubbed into English, and re-released as The Boat, and given a full release in that format.

Apparently the American public didn't want to see a film about German footwear....
