Elgar's Cello Concerto

Postby shostakovich » Mon Dec 04, 2006 10:20 pm

When it comes to cello concerti I believe Dvorak's is alone on top (I'm very fond of Dvorak's music --- except for the piano concerto, which I find only so-so). I get some enjoyment in Herbert's 2nd, which was the inspiration for Dvorak's. There's one by Lalo that I like much better than the Saint-Saens #1 on the same disc. But I've listened to Elgar's cello concerto several times in the last week. It's quite wonderful (but not moreso than Dvorak's). There's also one by Walton that I need to give more time to. Any other fans of the Elgar?

As the cello being my favorite instrument, I'm interested in obtaining more cello music.

I've never heard Elgar's Cello Concerto, but the words "cello concerto" tell me that I might enjoy his, and I'm sure Dvorak's.

I have Bach's solo cello suites, and Beethoven's cello sonatas. I'd now like to get Vivaldi's cello concertos and work my way up to Elgar, Saint-Saens and Dvorak.

Any other well known cello works, especially concerti?

Do we get a preview (or whatever you call a special performance of a piece before it is played for the general public for the first time)? :)

I remember you mentioning that. Is this something that's been done before, 5 cellos?

I'm not sure if 5, but Martin Bresnick wrote a piece for 8 cellos, and there is that Bachianas Brasileas by Villa Lobos for a bunch of cellos. there are quite a few pieces for cello ensembles, enough for yale to have the yale cello ensemble. I think we see this with cello more than any other instrument because the cello has an enourmous range.

If I were to play a stringed instrument, it would be Cello.
I love the tone of a Cello!

If I had a real e-mail address for you, I'd forward it. It's got strangling violinists in it. Really.

Though bignaf says that they're not really strangling.

The Elgar Cello Concerto is THE big one in the current cello repertoire, thanks largely to Jacqueline Dupre. She recorded a very popular version, but there are others.

I got it, thanks. At least the audience didn't want to strangle the violinists.

Didn't Chopin write a decent cello concerto (or 2)?

Cello fans should not neglect the Haydn Cello Concertos, especially the D Major. These are typical of Haydn's well-crafted pieces and I have always found them light and charming. Give them a try.

Thanks for bringing Haydn up, Bones.

I think Navneeth requested a Haydn Cello Concerto yesterday or earlier this week.

What about Boccherini?

chopin wrote some pieces for cello and piano and a piano trio (piano cello and violin). but no cello concerto. these are the only non-solo (inclusing with orchestra) piano pieces of his I know of except for some songs.

I think Bloch's Schelomo is a terrific work. Later in life he wrote Voice In the Wilderness for cello and orchestra. It's nice, but lacks the passion of Schelomo.

I think the violinist, Shlomo Mintz (sp?) spells his name that way. We can only guess how Solomon the Wise would have done it, had the Roman alphabet been a consideration to him.

Have you guys heard that kings of Ethiopia claim descendance from Solomon and Sheba? And that the Ark of the Covenant is secluded in that country?

Consider this a mini-hijack. Back to the cello, anybody care for Faure's Elegy?
